Teaching and learning
Learning through celebrating London science
Here are some examples to show how this web site enhances the teaching and learrning of science.
A London context for science topics
Many of the entries on this site connect directly or indirectly with topics in the science curriculum. For example:
- the thermite process
- the applications of drinking water and sewerage
- the fight against diseases such as malaria.
A starting point for case studies and projects
All the entries on the site have web links. Many of these links lead to interesting web sites that link to the school curriculum.
This means that learners can use the site as a starting point for researching a topic. For example to learn about:
- air quality and the methods used to analyse data
- the applications of modern techniques of chemical analysis
- the use of epidemiology to track down the cause of cholera
A large audience for science communication
This site offers young people the chance to communicate with a large audience. An entry to the site can be just a title, 100+ words, a digital image and a web link where people can find out more. Anyone can contribute on-line with an entry:
- based on an interview with a scientist,
- describing a local place with a science connection
- about the work of people who apply science in their work.
For more examples download this PowerPoint presentation prepared for the annual meeting of the ASE London Region in March 2007. Select 'Notes page' in the 'View menu' for brief comments on each slide and links to specific pages on this web site.
