A 200 year-old smock mill
Upminster windmill

There were there main types of mill in England: post, tower and smock mills. Upminster windmill fantailYou can see one of these types alongside the A124 road in Upminster.

A typical smock mill consists of an octagonal, wooden structure with sloping, weatherboarded sides. When painted white the mill resembled a linen smock of a countryman

Only the cap of a smock mill rotates. The fantail at the rear of the cap automatically turns the sails so that they face into the wind.
