The reservoir is a valuable habitat for plants and animals is a very urban part of north-west London. Much of the area is a Site of Special Scientific interest and home for a large colony of great crested grebes.

Water for the canal
Plans for the reservoir were drawn up in 1803. It was built much later and completed in 1837.

The purpose fo the reservoir was to supply water to the Paddington arm of the Grand Union canal. Water still flows to the canal along a feeder canal through Neasden and Stonebridge.
