Making water safe to drink
Hornsey Water Treatment Works

The new river still flows past the Hornsey Treatment works below the Alexandra Palace but the London ring main means that the whole of the 14 acre site is no longer needed.

Pipes and pumps at the Hornsey worksThe bromate problem
There is concern about the bromate levels in the water from Hornsey. So a new water treatment plant is needed. There will be four new buildings to house the associated plant and machinery.

The old pumping station
The original pump house for the water works was built in 1903. Part of the pump house will become an artist's studio and gallery. Lower levels of the pump house will provide gym and spa facilities.

Housing takes over
Much less space is now needed for storing and treating water thanks to the London ring main. Instead a large part of the old water works will be taken over for housing.
