Evidence-based practice in surgery
The Royal College of Surgeons
The company of surgeons has existed since 1745. It gained its royal charter in 1800 and has been based in Lincoln's Inn Fields ever since.
The college as a centre for science
The college has many roles. These include:
~ promoting and supports surgical research in the UK,
~ assessing the clinical effectiveness of surgical methods,
~ hosting a library and museum which are rich in current and historical information about surgery.
Clinical Effectiveness Unit
The college works with the Health Services Research Unit at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine to study the effectiveness of surgical treatments.
The National Collaborating Centre for Acute Care
The College is home to a virtual research team. This draws together expertise from all over the UK to develop clinical guidelines for surgeons.
