Make some new discoveries
Discovery Museum
The Discovery Museum, the first UK science museum outside London, has recently undergone a ??12.5 million update and now includes several new displays about the River Tyne.
The Story of the Tyne examines how the river became one of the countries most successful trading rivers and also looks at the ecology of the river and how pollution affects both humans and wildlife. The exhibition houses 29 ship models including the SS Serenia. This super tanker was the largest ship ever built on the Tyne when she was launched in 1960. The redesign also includes a hands-on water play area especially developed for the under 7s. Play Tyne includes models of the Millennium and Swing Bridges which can be operated by the children and ??boat kits?? which allow the children to assemble their own boats.
Other exhibits at the museum include the hands-on Science maze, Charles Parson??s ??Turbinia??, the first vessel to be powered by steam turbine, and Joseph Swan??s light bulbs.
