TV programmes like 'Silent Witness' and 'Crime Scene Investigators' have brought forensic science to the public's attention. At the University of Teesside students are taught to do it for real.
Forensic science is the examination and analysis of evidence from a crime scene, victim or suspect. Forensic evidence is more reliable than witness memories and is often a critical part of the prosecution process.
At the University of Teesside the forensic investigators and crime scene officers of the future are in training. They learn how to record a crime scene, collect and analyse evidence such as glass fragments, clothing fibres and biological fluids and establish the causes of fires or traffic accidents.
To ensure the students are fully prepared for their careers the University has a 16-room Crime House, where simulated crime scenes are set up, and works closely with the National Training Centre for Scientific Support to Crime Investigation.
