The beautiful game
Middlesbrough Football Club
When you think about science you might not immediately think football but with the game becoming increasing competitive, the appliance of science is becoming more and more important.
With the astronomical transfer fees changing hands for Premiership players you would be forgiven for thinking that the fortunes of a football team depended on their talent. Whilst there is no doubt that this is important science and technology also have a part to play.
All professional sports are supported by a whole host of scientists from a range of different disciplines. Coaches, physiotherapists and nutritionists use their scientific knowledge to ensure the players are in peak physical condition. Product designers research the perfect materials for the players' kit, shoes, the balls - you name it! Basic principles of physics and maths can even help players to judge at what angle and with how much force they should kick the ball to make sure it finds the net!
