The Horniman Museum
Frederick Horniman was a wealthy tea trader with a mission to bring 'the world' to Forest Hill. You can enjoy his collection and much more at the museum that he built and gave, with its gardens, to the people of London.
Natural history
You can study evolution and ecology with the help of the large collection of specimens in the museum. The collection includes rare fossils and preserved animals gathered from all over the world. There is a fine collection of mounted birds.
The aquarium
There has been an aquarium in the museum since it opened in 1901. Among the exhibits is a tank to simulate a pond in a London garden with other tanks alongside to show how plastic litter and other hazards threaten life in the water.
The buildings
The museum has been modernised and expanded to created bright and airy spaces to house the exhibitions. One building has a turf roof and ventilation system to save energy and maintain a pleasant work place with minimum impact on the environment.
