The Environmental Research Group,

We run the London Air Quality Network which brings together the air quality monitoring activities of the local councils in, and around, London to help us to understand and manage air pollution in the region. The picture shows one of our team running fortnightly checks on the monitoring equipment.

There are three main strands to our work supporting the Air Quality Network.

Monitoring
Coordinating over one hundred air quality monitoring sites across the Greater London area.

Emissions
Investigating and controlling emissions from industrial processes.

Modelling
Using maths and computers to predict present and future concentrations of pollution from road transport and industrial plant.

The group is trying to find out why around 10-15% of the population are particularly sensitive to air pollution. They would like to find ways to make these people less susceptible to the effects of air pollution.
