Electricity: A New Generation
Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, SETPOINT Greater Manchester
One hundred sixth-form students from across Greater Manchester took up the ??Electricity Challenge?? posed by the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society.
The Challenge ?? to propose a UK Policy on electricity generation for the next three decades.
This challenge was set to bring attention to the current issues surrounding electricity generation. Young people of today will have to live with the consequences of decisions being taken by the Government now, as resources of fossil fuels dwindle and new technologies are introduced. Teams of up to 6 six-form students from schools and colleges all over Greater Manchester tackled the topic whilst generating posters for judging at the Phase 1 event.
Taking place on the 3rd November 2006, the students presented their Phase 1 posters at the University of Manchester. Twelve teams made it to the Phase 1 event coming from Altrincham Boys?? Grammar School, Altrincham Girls?? Grammar School, Audenshaw High School Sixth Form Centre, Bolton School Boys Division, Loreto College, Manchester Grammar School, Parrs Wood High School, and Sale Grammar School.
Six winning teams are being invited back to participate in the Phase 2 event on 9th March 2007 where they will be asked to give presentations detailing their recommendations for the future of electricity generation. Perhaps the government should watch this space!
Support for its activity has come from PBPower, the North West Development Agency, the University of Manchester and SETPOINT Greater Manchester.
