A New Kind of Museum
Urbis
Urbis opened in June 2002 and is a new kind of museum in a spectacular glass building, which stretches high above Manchester city centre.
Your journey through Urbis
A series of interactive exhibits lead you on a journey exploring life in different cities around the world, with special focus on the cities of Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Paris, Singapore and Manchester.
A spectacular one-minute sky glide to the fourth floor in the M.E.N Glass Elevator begins your visit to Urbis. With the Manchester skyline as the backdrop, you are free to explore the four cascading exhibition floors at you own pace. Each of the exhibition floors has it??s own theme:
4. Arrive invites you to throw yourself into the sights and sounds of arriving in a bustling city for the very first time.
3. Change looks at the evolution of the city, experience 200 years of Manchester??s history through two multi-sensory theatres.
2. Order investigates the challenge of the city, how different groups of people interact and live together in cities, how cities control us and how we control ourselves.
1. Explore presents the lives of six great cities and invites you to explore the city of your imagination.
The four floors of Urbis are complemented by changing exhibitions, seminars and debates, workshops and many other special events that are held all year round.
