A station not an opera house
Oxford Road Station
One of the lesser stations in Manchester is strangely reminiscent of a famous opera house but this one exploits timber rather than concrete.
Travellers from Oxford Road can catch trains to towns across the north of Engand including Liverpool, Blackpool, Leeds and Sheffield.
The original station, dating back to 1849, was very run down by the 1950s. The British Rail architects came up with a dramatic design to fit in with a triangular site on top of a railway viaduct. The new structure was based on cone-shaped shells of wood. It was renovated in 1998.
