On the 14th November 2005, pupils aged 13-19 from schools and colleges across Greater Manchester attended the annual IEE Christmas Lecture entitled ??The Amazing Discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope?? at the Maxwell Building, the University of Salford.

The lecture was given by Dr Ian Griffin, Director of Manchester??s Science and Industry Museum, and SETPOINT Greater Manchester??s Charlotte Thorley. Dr Griffin was educated at University College London and was Head of the Office of Public Outreach for the Hubble Telescope at NASA??s Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

The interactive presentation consisted of an hour-long lecture about the history and discoveries of the Hubble telescope and the breath-taking images it has taken since its launch in 1990. The presentation featured a variety of demonstrations, which included 3-D light shows watched through the 3-D glasses, a human model of the solar system, and making a comet with dry ice and Worcester sauce!

This year??s lecture celebrated the IEE??s 50th year of holding lectures for schools. The first lecture was held at UMIST in 1955. Entitled ??Electric Traction??, the lecture was given by R Brooks of Metropolitan Vickers.

Did you know?
On 15th May 2005, images projected by the Hubble Telescope revealed two new moons belonging to the ice-planet of Pluto. What else will the Hubble Telescope reveal about space?

The IEE Christmas Lecture is held annually and is free of charge.
