Wildlife facilities get a face lift
South Gare Wetlands Project
A six month programme to improve accessibility at a Site of Special Scientific Interest at Teesmouth has been launched.
South Gare is an area of marshland and sand dunes important for migrating birds and home to various flora and fauna. It has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. However, due to a lack of visitor facilities the area is neglected.
Recently funding from the European Regional Development Fund, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Corus has made it possible to revamp the site to improve visitor access whilst preserving the wildlife.
The work is being managed by Tees Valley Wildlife Trust and includes resurfacing footpaths and clearing rubbish. Once the work is completed the trust hopes that local people will volunteer to help maintain the site. Visitors are welcome all year round.
