Climbing inside an old pumping station
Stoke Newington castle
The Victorian engineers disguised the true function of this pumping station by designing it with a castle-like appearance. Now it is an indoor climbing centre.
The castle then
The castle once housed pumps to distribute the water brought to the nearby reservoir by the New River.
The castle now
Today the inside of the castle has been converted to house a cliff for climbing made of wooden panels coated with resin. The wall is around 40ft high and covered with holds which climbers use to haul their way up.
