Drinking in the name of an illustrious engineer
The Engineer Public House
The Engineer is a popular pub and restaurant near to Primrose Hill.
Which engineer?
The pub is named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel who followed in the footsteps of his father Marc Isambard Brunel but went on to greater achievements.
What did Brunel have to do with the pub?
Claverts the Brewers built the pub between 1845 and 1850 for. It may be that Brunel was in charge but noone is quite sure. What is certain is that Brunel had his offices in the building for a while.
Engineer extraordinary
Brunel's energy and range were extraordinary. He engineered Paddington station, a prefab hospital for Florence Nightingale in the Crimea, the fastest railway locomotives of the day, the whole of a mainline railway with its tunnels and bridges as well as a series of innovative steamships.
