A World Leader in Cancer Research
Christie's Hospital

The Christie's Hospital is the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind in Europe, and remains a global leader in cancer research and development.

Care Home
Founded in 1892, Christie's was set up as a care home for people suffering from cancer and was funded by the fortune left to the people of Manchester by the wealthy industrialist Sir Joseph Whitworth. gmcrchristies

In 1902, the care home in Stanley Grove was renamed Christie's Hospital in honour of Chancellor Richard Copley Christie, who was the driving force behind the venture.

The Paterson Institute
After the merger of the hospital with the Holt Radium Institute, and subsequent move to new premises in Withington, Dr Ralston Paterson and his team of clinicians and physicists turned the hospital into a globally recognised centre for the treatment of cancer with radiation.

Dr Paterson's wife, Dr Edith Paterson began research at Christie's in 1938, and became a renowned pioneer in childhood cancers and anti-cancer drug treatments.

With the aid of funds from the Woman's Trust Fund, new research laboratories were opened in 1966. Named the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, the laboratories are supported by the Cancer Research Campaign and remain world leaders in the development of anti-cancer drugs.

Fund Raising
In 2001, Christie's against Cancer marked the centenary of the hospital by raising ??25m towards a number of projects identified to helping the Christie's specialists achieve their goals and visions for the future.
