People in Glass Houses
The National Glass Centre

Did you know that almost all of the Pyrex bought in the UK is produced in Sunderland? This and other facts about the history, art and technology of glass can be discovered at the National Glass Centre.

The works of up and coming artists are displayed in exhibitions at the centre and visitors can take part in practical workshops in The Glass Studio including stained glass and engraving techniques. And through the Glass Tour visitors discover the 1300 year history of glass and are shown how important glass is to our every day lives from glass fibres allowing communication at incredible speed to the spectacles many people rely on to help them see clearly.
The centre itself has a glass roof which visitors can walk on and can hold the weight of up to 4600 people at any one time!
