Water, Water Everywhere!
Tees Cottage Pumping Station

Discover the history of Darlington's water supply.

The Pumping Station began supplying water to the people of Darlington in 1849 and two of the original working pumping engines can still be viewed. For four weekends a year they are displayed running under their pumping load.

The engines are housed in their own purpose builts buildings, dating from 1847 to 1901 and both are still driven by their original pumps.

The Beam Engine celebrates its centenary this year and is still supplied by its original Lanchashire boiler. The Gas Engine was designed and built by Richard Hornsby and is the largest preserved example of a two-cylinder gas engine.
