Hockley's precious Jewel
The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter

Take this opportunity to discover the skill of the jeweller's craft and enjoy a unique tour of an original jewellery factory, frozen in time.

The year 1981, a now-familiar story of a factory closing down yet somehow this one was preserved as it was at closure, even down to the coffee mugs of the workers.

A Jewel in timeThe Smith and Pepper Factory, makers of fine jewellery since the nineteenth century, has been captured in a "time-capsule" for visitors to enjoy the jewellery-making techniques much as they were in the early 1900's.

Most of the jewellery made in Britain is produced in the workshops of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. Over 100 jewellery shops line the streets of this unique area and are a popular attraction for bargain hunters and those looking for that special purchase. Many workshops will be happy to make up jewellery to your own design or undertake repairs.

Would the Jewellery Quarter be there if Matthew Boulton hadn't pioneered his steam-powered coin presses and campaigned for an assay office in Birmingham? Check him out Matthew Boulton - Engineering Pioneer
